Telcos say APIs deliver internal innovation and agility
June 16th, 2014
IIR Telecom organised a telecomAPI event in Munich last week. It was attended by European Telcos, API platform vendors (Oracle, HP, Apigee etc), and companies selling APIs (Apizee, Apidaze, Nexmo etc).
It was interesting to listen to the telco viewpoint. Telcos have been investing in service delivery platforms / API management platforms – proprietary and otherwise – for some time now.
- APIs are great;
- Platforms are great;
- Managing the API lifecycle is essential.
You need to think about the API from concept to retirement, and support all the different users/stakeholders through that lifecycle with automated tools.
The primary value – internal innovation & agility
There’s a lot of talk about public APIs and wooing the developer community. But the Telco experience is still that you get best return through exposing and managing internal enterprise APIs.
Why? Because it reduces the cost of internal integrations. More evidence that Jeff Bezos was right.
But APIs can do more
With the growing success of companies like Nexmo selling comms APIs to ‘long-tail developers’, the Telcos might find a new reason to embrace APIs.
